Qurani (Qur'an) (Quran in Swahili)
Translation of The Holy Qur'an into Swahili Language
The Qur'an, in Arabic (القرآن), is the sacred book of Islam. Muslims view the Qur'an as the "Word of Allah (God)." To them, this book is fundamentally different from the scriptures of other religions as it is believed to have been written directly by Allah, through His last prophet, Muhammad.
Language and Translation: It has been written and recited exclusively in the Arabic language for over 1,400 years. According to Qur'an (42:8), God said to Muhammad: "And thus We have revealed to you the Qur'an in Arabic that you may warn the Mother of Cities [Makkah] and those around it."
However, as many Muslims around the world today do not understand Arabic, the true meaning of the Qur'an is provided in different languages through translations that help readers comprehend the significance of Arabic words in the Qur'an. These books act as guides for the Qur'an - Muslims do not read them as part of the Holy Quran to replace the Arabic Quran.
Many Muslims believe that these translations are not the Holy Qur'an and are not authentic; they are merely Arabic copies derived from the real Quran.
Muslims believe that the Holy Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel in the cave of Hira over a period of more than twenty-three years until his death. During Muhammad's lifetime, the Qur'an was not a written book but was transmitted orally. Consequently, people memorized it.
The Prophet may have been illiterate, but according to Muslims, his companion Abu Bakr wrote down portions of it while he was alive. When Abu Bakr became caliph, he compiled the Qur'an into a sacred book. Uthman, his successor, removed elements that were not related to the Holy Qur'an.
Chapters, Verses, Ayahs: There are 30 parts in the Qur'an, making up 114 chapters. Each chapter contains a varying number of verses. According to Islamic teachings, 86 chapters were revealed in Mecca and 24 in Medina.
Relationship between Qur'an and Bible: The Holy Qur'an also mentions that Jews and Christians believe in the true God. These religions, along with Islam, are called Abrahamic religions due to these connections.
There are verses in the Qur'an that recount stories similar to those found in the Bible. Individuals from the Bible mentioned in the Qur'an include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Lot, Ishmael, Jacob, Joseph, Aaron, Moses, King David, Solomon, Elisha, Jonah, Job, Zechariah, John the Baptist, Virgin Mary, and Jesus.
Nevertheless, there are significant differences between Islam and the Bible regarding how these stories are narrated. For instance, while Christians believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Muslims consider him just a prophet honored by his name Isa bin Maryam.
Islam teaches that these differences occur because original Biblical scriptures have been lost or altered by some people. However, there is no evidence outside of Quran to support this teaching.
